The Secret of Blue Water

Part One: The Review
Part Two: Nadia vs. Atlantis
Part Three: Anime Lyrics

This page is just me making fun of Nadia, and by extension all other anime, because of the incomprehensible song lyrics the series posesses.

Now, of course, I understand this is due to translation quirks. Unlike the main dialogue of a series, music lyrics can't always be localized in such a way as they make sense. But sometimes the end result is just downright laughable. In my opinion, a series could do better with either creating an entirely new theme song, or at least leaving the old one untranslated. There's a certain mystique about foreign lyrics, I think, that would work for an anime series (especially one like Nadia) better than streams of randomly thrown together words.

Still, all commentary aside, I watched 975 minutes of Nadia and, confound it, I want to make fun of it some more. So allow me my eccentricities and let's get on with the show!

Opening Theme Song

In your eyes I see a bright future
Lighting up everything

Man, that's a bright future there, boy. That'll save me money on flashlights.

I don't like timid people
I won't betray the blue sky

I'm sure the blue sky will be happy to hear that, but I don't know what this has to do with being timid.

Before I dream, I want to fly

That way you can dream about flying, right?

My heart's music box
opens and resounds

Ouch! That really sounds painful. I think that might require coronary bypass surgery.

As it begins to play, I am
gladdened and encouraged

Yeah, but how can you hear it? I mean, it's in your ribcage. Do you plug the headphones into your belly button or something?

In your eyes I see a bright future
Words are an eternal signal

Only if you shout them really loud.

Don't forget to try in mind

I really want to mock this part, but to do that I'd have to at least have a passing idea what it means.

More than a jewel, love
Lights up everything

Jewels actually aren't all that great as a light source, although I'm sure they sparkle quite prettily in the light of my "bright future".

Ending Credits Song

What should I do about this
impatience in my heart?

Your heart is probably impatient about having a music box stuck in there. Go see a doctor.

I have lost sight of my distant dreams

Better focus on those short-term ones then. Like flying.

I cry as I look up to the sky

Oh no! You didn't betray it did you!?

Where our promise shines brightly

Between love, this jewel, and the bright future in my eyes I think we're covered on the whole light thing.

Try! Comforting words are like breezes
that don't reach my heart

Um, okay, I'll try some not-so-comforting ones then.

My misgivings grow

Yeah, I can see 'em from two blocks away. I'm telling you, go see a doctor.

But I make my own decisions so
I will probably be alright on my own

Not entirely accurate... but left on your own you'll eventually die from internal bleeding caused by a music box lodged in your heart, so at least I'll stop having to listen to you whine about it.

Even if I stumble, even if I get lost,
there's always tomorrow

If you manage to get lost even while toting all that light around, I doubt tomorrow will do you much good.

Okay, okay, this whole page is a bit mean-spirited and, obviously, it's not fair to use Nadia as a benchmark for all anime opening lyrics. But c'mon, I just watched 16 hours of this tripe, and I still need a way to vent.

Just to show I'm not all that bad a guy, here are the mp3 downloads. The songs aren't really bad in and of themselves, it's just the lyrics that are incomprehensible.
